The 2nd Cleansing Dictionary: The Right Korean Foam or Gel Cleanser for Every Skin Concern

"The second cleanse is where most routines go wrong. Too harsh and your face squeaks; too mild and sunscreen residue stays behind. And a little gossip worth knowing: brightening or anti-ageing ingredients in a cleanser get about sixty seconds on your skin, so treat them as a bonus, not a treatment. That's why TikTok's '60-second cleansing rule' isn't silly. I've matched two Korean water-based cleansers to each of five concerns, after using every one of them for at least two weeks."

Dictionary Series: Cleansing · Toner · Serum · Moisturizer · Eye Care · Mask

First: foam, gel or exfoliating cleanser?

Breakouts? A BHA cleanser. Dry or tight? A creamy, low-pH foam. Rough texture? A mild AHA gel or oat cleanser. Sensitive mornings? A low-pH gel. Pores and marks? A clarifying foam. Massage for about a minute, rinse with lukewarm water, and pat dry.

Low pH

Mildly acidic cleansers are gentler on the skin barrier, especially in hard-water areas.

Foam vs gel

Foams feel more thorough; gels feel lighter and suit mornings and sensitive skin.

Actives in cleansers

Short contact time: helpful for acids, a bonus for brightening ingredients.

Your Korean Second-Cleanse Questions, Answered

pH, acids and the 60-second rule.

Why does low pH matter in a cleanser?

Skin is slightly acidic. Low-pH cleansers keep it closer to that, which tends to feel less tight and irritating, especially with hard water.

Can a cleanser fade dark spots?

Only a little: it's on your skin for about a minute. Use brightening cleansers as a bonus and rely on a serum and daily SPF for results.

What is the 60-second cleansing rule?

Massaging your cleanser for about a minute instead of a quick splash. It gives the cleanser time to work and is gentler than scrubbing harder.

Can I use a BHA cleanser while pregnant?

Rinse-off cleansers with a little BHA are often considered acceptable, but our label is conservative. Check each product page and ask your doctor.
