Winter Skincare Routine: The 4-Step Korean Routine for Dry, Tight, Heating-Stressed Skin

"Every winter my combination skin turns into two problems at once: tight and flaky on the cheeks, still shiny on the nose. Cold wind outside and dry heating inside pull water out of the skin from both directions. More cream alone rarely fixes it; the order and type of layers does. This is the four-step Korean routine I switch to from November to March, and why each step is there."

The short answer: how to change your routine for winter

Switch to a gentler, low-pH cleanser, add a hydrating toner in layers, use a richer, barrier-repairing cream at night, and keep a moisturizing sunscreen every morning. The principle is simple: add water first, then seal it in. Most winter skin is both dehydrated (short on water) and dry (short on oil), so it needs both.

Dehydrated

Short on water. Feels tight, looks dull, fine lines show more. Heating and cold, dry air are the usual causes.

Dry

Short on oil. Feels rough, flaky or itchy. Skin produces less sebum in cold weather, and wind strips what's there.

Hydrate first

Water-based toners and essences in thin layers, on slightly damp skin, straight after cleansing.

Then seal

A cream with ceramides and lipids on top, so the water stays in the skin instead of evaporating into heated air.

Steps 1 and 2: Cleanse Gently, Then Hydrate in Layers

Winter is when harsh cleansers do the most damage. A low-pH foam cleans without stripping, and an essence-like toner patted in two or three layers puts water back before anything else.

SKIN1004 Madagascar Centella Ampoule Foam (125ml)

A low-pH centella foam that cleans off the day without leaving skin squeaky or tight.

A soft, creamy foam with centella asiatica extract and a low-pH formula that respects the barrier. On cold mornings I sometimes rinse with water only and use this at night. Fragrance-free, alcohol-free, vegan, pregnancy-friendly and made with clean ingredients.

Best for: sensitive, combination, oily and normal skin; daily cleansing.Less suited to: heavy makeup or water-resistant SPF on its own; oil-cleanse first.

Editor’s tip: Wash with lukewarm, not hot, water. Hot water strips oils faster in winter.

COSRX Full Fit Propolis Synergy Toner (150ml)

72.6% black bee propolis and honey extract in an essence-like toner: hydration with a warm, healthy glow that lasts through heated rooms.

Propolis and honey are soothing and moisturizing, and the slightly thicker texture layers well. Two or three layers took my dull winter cheeks back to glowing. Fragrance-free, alcohol-free, dermatologically-tested, pregnancy-friendly and made with clean ingredients; not vegan.

Best for: dry, sensitive, normal and combination skin; winter dullness; the layering method.Less suited to: anyone allergic to bee products; vegan routines.

Editor’s tip: Pat each layer in until it's absorbed before adding the next.

Steps 3 and 4: Repair at Night, Protect by Day

At night, a calming cream with ceramides and peptides repairs what the day took. In the morning, a moisturizing sunscreen works as your last hydrating layer.

Dear, Klairs Midnight Blue Calming Cream (60ml)

Guaiazulene and centella calm wind-reddened skin, while ceramide and peptides support the barrier overnight.

The natural blue of guaiazulene, from chamomile, calms redness; ceramide NP and a peptide complex support a stressed barrier. I use a thicker layer on cheeks and nose on windy days. Fragrance-free, alcohol-free, vegan and pregnancy-friendly.

Best for: sensitive, normal, combination and acne-prone skin; windburn and redness.Less suited to: very dry skin that needs a richer cream; layer one underneath.

Editor’s tip: Very dry? Apply your usual cream first, then this on red areas only.

Your winter routine, morning and night

The same four products, used differently depending on the time of day.

Morning

Rinse with water or a little foam → one or two layers of propolis toner → sunscreen. Add a moisturizer first if your skin is dry.

Night

Oil-cleanse if you wore makeup → centella foam → two or three toner layers → calming cream, thicker on cheeks and nose.

Beyond skincare

A humidifier in the bedroom, lukewarm showers and a scarf over the lower face on windy days all reduce water loss.

Your Winter Skincare Questions, Answered

Dry vs dehydrated, heating, and when to switch back.

Why does my skin get so dry in winter?

Cold air holds little moisture, indoor heating dries it further, and skin produces less oil in the cold. Together they increase water loss through the skin barrier, leaving it tight, dull and flaky.

How do I know if my skin is dry or dehydrated?

Dehydrated skin feels tight and looks dull but can still be oily; dry skin feels rough and flaky and lacks oil everywhere. In winter most people have a bit of both.

Should I use a heavier moisturizer in winter?

Often, yes, at least at night, but add hydration underneath first. A rich cream on dehydrated skin seals in very little water.

Do I need sunscreen in winter?

Yes. The UV rays most linked to skin ageing reach you all year and pass through clouds. Our winter sun guide explains why, and what to use on the slopes.
