Hard Water, Hair Fall and Straw-Like Hair: Why Your Hair Changed in Europe, and the 5-Step Korean Scalp Routine That Helps

"Three months after I moved from Seoul to Zurich, I started finding hair everywhere: the shower drain, my pillow, the back of my coat. My hair felt like straw and my scalp itched for no reason. Ask any Korean, Asian or American friend who has moved to Europe and you'll hear the same story, usually with the same culprit: the water. So I did what Koreans do. I treated my scalp like my face, with a pH-friendly wash, weekly exfoliation and a cooling tonic, the routine you'd get at a Seoul head spa, and my hair slowly came back to itself. Here's that routine, plus what's really going on with hard water and all the shower-drain gossip."

The short answer: what a scalp routine does

If your hair got stiffer, duller and seemed to fall more after moving to Europe, you're not imagining it, and you're far from alone. Hard water leaves calcium and magnesium on hair and scalp, which can make hair rough, tangly and more likely to snap, and broken hair in the drain looks exactly like hair fall. A big move can also trigger a few months of extra shedding on its own. A Korean scalp routine tackles the part you can control: exfoliate weekly, wash with a gentle low-pH shampoo, massage, and finish with a cooling tonic. If shedding is heavy or lasts longer than a few months, have a dermatologist check it; sometimes there's another cause worth finding.

Scalp pH

Healthy scalp skin is slightly acidic. Low-pH shampoos clean without pushing it towards alkaline.

Build-up

Sebum, dead skin and product residue. Weekly exfoliation with a scalp scaler clears it.

Hard water

Mineral residue makes hair rough, stiff and more prone to breakage. Clarifying and low-pH washing help.

The same hard-water effect on your face is explained in hard water and your skin.

"Everyone says European water makes your hair fall out. Is it true?"

Hard Water and Hair: The Shower-Drain Gossip, Sorted

Expat forums, Korean group chats and hairdressers all have a theory. Here are the ones I hear most, what's actually behind them, and what to do.

What people say What's going on What helps
"My hair started falling out when I moved to Europe." Very common. Hard water makes hair stiffer and easier to break, and a big move (stress, new climate, new diet) can trigger extra shedding two to three months later. Both usually settle. Low-pH shampoo, conditioner on every wash, gentle detangling, and patience
"My hair feels like straw here." True to the touch: mineral build-up roughens the hair surface and stops it reflecting light, so it feels stiff and looks dull. A weekly scalp scaler, a mildly acidic wash, and a leave-in on the lengths
"A filter shower head fixes everything." It can help: many people swear their hair feels softer. Filters vary a lot, though, and many reduce chlorine more than calcium. Worth trying alongside a good routine, not instead of one
"Rinse with beer for thicker hair." A grandmother trick in Korea and much of Europe. Yeast proteins coat the hair and make it feel fuller; modern yeast and biotin shampoos are the less smelly version. A yeast or biotin shampoo for flat, fine hair
"Washing every day makes more hair fall out." It just looks that way: hairs that were already shed collect in the drain on wash day. An oily, congested scalp is better off washed regularly. Wash as often as your scalp needs, gently
"Koreans go to head spas for this." They do: Seoul's scalp spas, with exfoliation, massage and cooling tonics, have become a must-book for visitors. The 5 steps below are the at-home version

A quick self-check: if the hairs in your drain are short and broken, it's mostly breakage, so focus on softening the water's effect. If they're full length with a tiny white bulb at the end, it's shedding; if that continues for more than a few months, ask a dermatologist.

"My scalp feels coated and itchy two days after washing."

Steps 1 and 2: Exfoliate Weekly, Massage Daily

A scalp scaler once or twice a week clears what shampoo leaves behind; a few minutes of massage makes the whole routine more effective and feels wonderful.

Think of it as grandma's beer rinse, minus the smell. Yeast extract, biotin, panthenol and niacinamide care for scalp and roots, and caffeine and menthol give a cool, tingly feel. My flat roots had noticeably more lift after every wash, and over two months there seemed to be less hair in my drain, although I'd also changed the rest of my routine, so I can't credit one bottle. Alcohol-free and dermatologically-tested; contains fragrance.

Best for: oily or normal scalps; flat, fine hair.Less suited to: fragrance-sensitive or very dry scalps.

Your Scalp Care Questions, Answered

Hard water, hair loss, pH and how often.

Does hard water cause hair loss?

Many people, me included, notice more hair in the drain after moving to a hard-water area. Hard water makes hair stiffer and easier to break, and a move can trigger a few months of extra shedding. What hasn't been shown is hard water damaging the root itself, which is why breakage usually improves once you adapt your routine.

Can scalp care stop hair loss?

It can reduce breakage and keep your scalp in good shape, which is often what people notice most. Shedding from the root has many possible causes, from stress to iron levels to hormones, so if it's heavy or lasts more than a few months, a dermatologist can find out why.

How often should I exfoliate my scalp?

Once or twice a week for oily or congested scalps, once a week or less for dry or sensitive ones.

Why choose a low-pH shampoo?

Healthy scalp skin is slightly acidic. A low-pH shampoo cleans without pushing it towards alkaline, which can leave a sensitive scalp tight and itchy.
