Vegan vs Cruelty-Free Skincare: What Each Label Means in K-Beauty, and Which Ingredients to Watch
"Vegan and cruelty-free are often used as if they meant the same thing. They don't: one is about what's in the bottle, the other is about how the product was tested. And Korean skincare has more animal-derived favourites than most people realise, from snail mucin to salmon PDRN. Our third KKUMIDA standard is Vegan, so here is what each label means, the K-beauty ingredients that rule a product out, and three vegan picks."
The short answer: vegan vs cruelty-free
Vegan is about ingredients: no animal-derived ingredients or by-products. Cruelty-free is about testing: no animal testing. In the EU, animal testing for cosmetics, and the sale of cosmetics newly tested on animals, has been banned since 2013, and South Korea introduced its own ban on animal testing for cosmetics in 2017, with limited exceptions. Like every cosmetic sold in the EU, every product we stock complies with the EU ban on animal testing for cosmetics. That makes the vegan label the one that tells you something extra about a K-beauty product on European shelves.
Vegan
No animal-derived ingredients: no snail mucin, honey, beeswax, lanolin, carmine, animal collagen or fish-derived PDRN.
Cruelty-free
No animal testing of the product or its ingredients for cosmetic purposes. Required by law for every cosmetic sold in the EU, including everything we stock.
How we check
Ingredients that can be plant or animal, such as squalane or collagen, are confirmed with the brand. If we can't confirm, the Vegan label stays off.

Animal-Derived Ingredients Common in K-Beauty
Several of Korean skincare's most loved ingredients come from animals. None of them is a problem for skin; they simply rule a product out of the Vegan label. Here is what to look for on the ingredient list.
| Ingredient | Source | Where you'll see it | Vegan alternative |
|---|---|---|---|
| Snail secretion filtrate | Snail mucin | Essences, creams, sheet masks | Fermented soybean, panthenol, hyaluronic acid |
| Sodium DNA (PDRN) | Usually salmon or trout | Creams, serums, masks | Plant-derived "phyto PDRN" |
| Collagen, hydrolysed collagen | Often marine or animal | Masks, creams | Peptides, plant or biotech collagen |
| Honey, propolis, bee venom, beeswax | Bees | Essences, balms, lip care | Centella, plant waxes |
| Squalane | Shark liver or plant (olive, sugarcane) | Creams, oils | Plant-derived squalane |

Fermented plants and stable vitamin C derivatives deliver the hydration and glow K-beauty is known for, without animal-derived ingredients.
Mixsoon Bean Toner (300ml)
Fermented soybean delivers amino acids and a cushioning, milky texture that hydrates straight after cleansing and supports a stressed barrier. It is the vegan swap I suggest most often to people giving up snail essence. Vegan, alcohol-free, fragrance-free, dermatologically-tested, pregnancy-friendly and made with clean ingredients.
Best for: sensitive, combination, normal and oily skin; dehydration; vegan routines.Less suited to: anyone wanting exfoliation from a toner.
Editor’s tip: Pat two layers into damp skin; the 300ml bottle makes generous layering easy.

It suited my reactive skin as a daily morning step under sunscreen. Vegan, alcohol-free, fragrance-free, pregnancy-friendly and made with clean ingredients.
Best for: normal, combination, dry and sensitive skin; dullness and uneven tone; vegan routines.Less suited to: anyone wanting a high-strength pure vitamin C serum.

Many overnight masks rely on collagen or honey. This one uses fermented rice instead.

Applied as the last step at night, the jelly seals in the layers beneath, while fermented rice bran helps soothe and brighten. It feels light enough for combination skin and never ended up on my pillow. Vegan, alcohol-free, fragrance-free, dermatologically-tested, pregnancy-friendly and made with clean ingredients.
Best for: combination, sensitive and dry skin; dehydration; vegan night routines.Less suited to: very dry skin in deep winter, which may need a richer cream underneath.

Labels, testing and common K-beauty ingredients.
Is vegan skincare the same as cruelty-free?
No. Vegan means no animal-derived ingredients; cruelty-free means no animal testing. A product can be one without the other.
Is K-beauty tested on animals?
South Korea introduced a ban on animal testing for cosmetics in 2017, with limited exceptions, and the EU has banned it since 2013 for any cosmetic sold there. Every product sold in the EU, including everything we stock, must comply with the EU ban.
Is snail mucin vegan?
No. Snail secretion filtrate is an animal-derived ingredient, so products containing it can't be labelled vegan. Fermented soybean toners such as the Mixsoon Bean Toner are a popular vegan alternative.
Is vegan skincare better for my skin?
Not inherently. Vegan describes ingredient origin, not performance or gentleness. Choose vegan for your values, and choose by skin type and concern for results.
